This small mountainous country in Asia has a unique political history. The King of Bhutan independently decided one day that his country should become a democracy --and then he worked to make it happen. I enjoyed the stories, dances, cooking, and movies from Bhutan. One interesting discussion concerned the medical establishment: both traditional and Western medicine are practiced simultaneously in different wings of the new hospital.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13247962.post-80568574272031275182009-01-06T12:53:00.000-08:002009-01-06T12:53:00.000-08:00Blogger Karen Kefauver said...My mom, Leslie Kefa...Blogger Karen Kefauver said...

My mom, Leslie Kefauver, noted that Bhutan was a featured country in the Smithsonian's Folklife Festival in Washington, D.C. last year. She asked Richard Kennedy, to comment:

"Yes, there has always been a minimum daily rate in Bhutan. It sounds arbitrary, undemocratic, etc. but, in fact, it is a model closely watched in travel circles. The experience they don’t want to repeat is Katmandu’s. So many back packers, trekkers, etc. overran Nepal that the culture suffered; many felt the economic gain never made the resulting destruction worthwhile – “killing the goose that laid the golden egg.” Bhutan watched closely and, now that the country is getting ready to open up to tourism, they are moving very carefully.

I traveled around the world twice with a pack on my back and I’m pretty sympathetic to the needs of and benefits to these travelers. But, at this stage in life, I’m more sympathetic to the guardians of culture. And actually, $165 - $240/day for hotel, food, car and full time guide/driver is not that bad. Hope your daughter gets to Bhutan one day!

Richard S. Govt. policy is for High value Low volume tourism in Bhutan. Here we try to get tourists, who
understand the effects of mass tourism. This reduces negative impact on culture, environment, people's happiness etc.

Rates from Sept. 2009 are up as per the Govt. circular. For more
than a decade it has been 200 US$, and govt. saw a need to raise due to
inflation here.

Please feel free to ask us for any details.

Regards and have a very nice day.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05763404083374578622noreply@blogger.com
